[/SIZE]The Town of Brookings
Located in the middle of a desert, Brookings is considered an oasis. Granted it’s not full of palm trees and gorgeous women, but it still provides a nice change of scenery from the endless desert that surrounds it. In fact the closest town to Brookings is almost sixty miles away, in all four directions. And with only one Bus coming through a day it could be considered a prison, to those who wish to leave.
The town itself was founded by Samuel Brookings, an early land developer who spotted a small grove a trees on his westward journey to the coast. Needless to say he quite fancied this little spot of trees and decided to start building. A few years later he had a couple of buildings, had moved his family in and was even getting a bit of business from fellow travelers making their way out to the coast.
A couple decades later and the town was booming.
Mr. Brookings was thrilled with his accomplishment, and even as he grew older, he was fully fascinated by how active his town had become. His oldest son, however, wasn’t as ecstatic about the town as the rest of the family.
Benjamin Brookings had a dark secret he kept hidden from his family. A secret even he wasn’t willing to believe. While the other young boys of the town went out an enjoyed themselves, Ben took to the grove of trees surrounding Brookings. And it was here that he let his secret grow.
Ben had the unique ability to create plant life at a thought. And while this power seems exciting to most, to him it was a scary experience, one he couldn’t explain. But everyday he would hide himself in the trees and let his magic work. Soon the small orchard was expanding and taking over the backyards of Brookings. After a few years, Ben had created nearly 12 acres of woods that traveled over the desert.
No one in Brookings could explain how the trees had quickly grown but none minded since they offered shade and scenery to look at.
The next generation of Brookings [Ben and his siblings] built a horse track in the woods, rebuilt some of the older buildings his father had created and even started a trade system with neighboring towns.
After a few years of running the town, Benjamin crept into Desdemona Woods and never returned to Brookings.
Brookshire Academy
The mansion was built by Benjamin [along with the help of a few men from town]. It became his safe haven, a place where he could be himself without having to worry about someone realizing how special he was. From the top floor he could see over Brookings, which gave him something to do as he stayed hidden from the world.
The mansion was massive and clearly he had no use for the hundreds of rooms he had yet to furnish. But something within Ben told him that maybe he wasn’t the only one out there with special gifts. That maybe, one day, he would be able to house others with the same fear as him.
Unfortunately, Ben didn’t live to see his home become a safe house, or to even finish building and furnishing. Instead his niece, Patricia [who had taken care of him in his older years], hired men to finish the mansion, to make touch-ups and even to add a few more rooms.
She married a rich banker who came through Brookings every so often and they lived in Brookshire happily until the end. Their daughter, Beatrice, realized very young that she, like her Great Uncle Ben, was special. But unlike her Uncle, she was given the gift of the Sight, she could see into the future. And shortly after her parents deaths she became the first headmaster of the new, Brookshire Academy.
Given her ability she could see and find other children born with special abilities. She would send them invitations to join the school, for them to live in an environment where they didn’t have to worry about being rejected or hated for their gifts.
But times are not so simple anymore.
