Richard is, if anything, a man of action that believes in shooting first and asking questions later, being curt and brash when he needs to be. Although Rick acts with bravado in most situations, he's not incapable of pathos or sympathy, having fallen in love with and marrying his true love, fathering a son, and losing both to a horrible accident, Rick considers family to be the most important thing not only in his life, but in others as well. Along with his prowess in firearms, Rick also knows how to defend himself unarmed and knows how to improvise when in a perilous situation.

Rick was born and raised in Sydney. He loves it there, and never wants to leave, unless of course he's just adventuring elsewhere. His parents were wealthy beyond belief, and everything they had was passed onto Rick when they died. However, it's not all about the money to him. He prefers to go out and fight for his money, his treasure, his gold. And he did, and still does. He met the love of his life while traveling in Israel, brought her home, fathered a son with her, and had the misfortune of watching the tow of them die in a car accident only six years into their marriage.
From that point on, Rick was never the same. He became quiet, sheltered, unable to communicate his feelings without the use of violence or alcohol. Until, by chance, he met young Selby as she inquired about a job in the city. He offered to buy her lunch in exchange for some friendly talk. Under normal circumstances, Selby would have refused, but considering she hadn't eaten for a couple days, she couldn't resist his offer.
Rick listened to Selby's story and was moved that this young girl had the courage to do what he could not. After lunch he invited the both of them to live with him, and introduced the two to the world of the Hunters. He was touched by the young girl, and slowly Rick turned around from his depressed state, he became more attentive to others, and decided that it was his job to take care of others like Selby. He went around tracking down kids in Australia that had the same type of crappy childhood as Selby, and eventually he introduced Biagio, Selby and Caje. The three seemed to hit it off right away, and Rick found that by doing this for others like him, he could live a little.
So, it's what he does. He finds kids who need help, and brings them into his world in order to help them.
