Sure, the sky was a putrid grey, but did that stop him from speeding through the deserted town? No. In fact, he was somewhere else, probably in his personal music bubble, unable to think of much else besides the song he was listening to.
Although, there was something strange happened today when he went to go to his daily shift; nobody was there. He couldn't quite put his finger on the reason why. Usually his manager was opening the broken-down garage doors just as he came to a skidding stop to take off his helmet, but today was different. When he woke up, it looked to him like the city seemed hollow, empty, and haunted at that.
The buzz of the red Vespa was soft enough to only echo a few blocks down. Making a smooth right, and a few lefts after that, he eased the engine to stop gradually at the very front of a red traffic light. Heaving a sigh, he looked both ways --like any other civilian--, and crossed, revving up the gas again. Just overhead, the light flashed red once, twice, BZZT-ed and went out for good.
He hummed along the way back to the edge of the town. There was a rusty chain-link fence by a run-down apartment called "The Highbrook Tower" It was always full of dust even when people were around in the old days. From the looks of the place the janitors were l-a-z-y. As he sped down the lane, he turned his head to look at himself in the glass, and smirked. This was where his friends used to hang out, at least down on the ground foor of the parking lot.
Swinging by to a halt on the curb, he unclipped his helmet and hopped off the moped, hanging it on one of the handlebars. Taking a few steady steps up to the very front of the building, he stared upwards. When you looked up at Hightbrook Tower, a few gargoyles perched upon the entrance wall seemed to be roaring back at you, in some twisted rage. If you looked harder, and all around the sides of the concrete frame, you'd see plenty of hidden faces of people throughout history. Julius Caesar here, Plato there. But the creepy thing about it was that all of the stone heads seemed to look at you wherever you went.
Lux heaved a sigh and walked inside, gently pushing the revolving doors inward, and rubbing off some of the dust on the foggy glass. He had to get a better, faster ride. Before yesterday, he listened to one of the conversations one of the other customers had. Something about...shady figures and red eyes. They said they were leaving because of it. A few mysterious deaths, but nothing else. He shrugged the thought off that day, but now it seemed like this was exactly what was happening. Who knows.
He kept walking slowly towards the old elevator. The doors were gold, but they were now pale, full of more dust and soot, obscuring the shine. Everything was empty, and unkept in the lobby. The Concierge's counter didn't look much better than the inside of a dumpster plus paperwork, to say the least. The floors were grey, and full of scratch marks. The bell at the front of the check-in desk lost its shine over the years, too. Hestitantly, Lux stepped forward and gingerly tapped the bell three times. Half expecting a busboy to help him out, he looked sideways, and behind him. No one's here. Shaking his head he moved to the front of the elevator, and pushed the "down" button, and it lit up, followed by a short DING.
The doors opened and in he went. There wasn't any music playing, and the walls of the elevator were painted an ashy shade of blue. He wrinkled his nose in slight disgust. When the doors shut and the elevator descended, he quickly dug out another key from the backpack, and waited for the elevator to stop. DING.
He poked his head out to make sure that no one was there, squinting to see through the pitch-black corners of the bottom floor. The air was cold, and dry down here; it smelled of soot and gasoline. Then he bounded upon the gritty floor, searching for a tarp-covered car. He spied it in a corner amongst a few other run-down cars. Yeah, that was it. "It's still here, thank God!" Letting his backpack slip from his shoulder with a THUD, he gripped the canvas and whirled it to the side. Who knew, that just beneath the gross, muddy tarp was a Pagani Zonda?{{CLICK}} Probably no one besides the people who jacked it and hid it here. A pretty fast car, and sleek at that, it was Lux's best steal of his first year here.
He pushed the button on the keys to unlock the doors, and he picked up his backpack, tossing it in the co-pilot seat before jumping inside, too. "Well, it seems that it's time for a test-drive, eh?" He jammed the key in the ignition and started up the car. VRRRROOM.
He sat up straight, for he thought he heard something move just behind a rusty Ford truck. He was right, 'cause the shrill sound echoed again when he toned down the engine to hear better. He swiveled his head; was there really something behind the truck? He narrowed his eyes to take a better look. There it goes again, some black, thin shadow by the bumper of the car. Something with red eyes.
Lux tapped the button on the side of his door to lower the window. There was definitely something there, and he had to see it firsthand. He was just about to open the door when...FWAK! A creature with long, black claws and a fugly face scratched him lightly on the left side of this face. It screeched in rage, and he stared at it for a moment and wondered if it was a lady. To him, it didn't look like any sort of lady he ever saw. More like a faggoty excuse for one, if anything.
So, Lux hit the gas and ran back in reverse, making a full 360 turn, setting the gear into forward, slamming the witch in between a boarded-up chain-link fence that stood between him and escape from this deranged "lady." He had the creature pinned, but not for long. Holy god this thing was strong as hell. He wasn't sure if he was able to back up, and then slam forward again to finish it off. Plus, he didn't want to get any scratches on the car, anyways.
An idea popped up in his head--he had a gun. DUH. He reached on the inside of his jacket and swiped the Colt out, still keeping his foot on the gas, as to keep the witch pinned to the fence. Then, he took aim, trying to shoot the witch's head, and BANG.BANG.BANG.BANG.BANG.BANG. He looked at the creature now, half exhaused by the looks of it, but not quite dead. At all. It was still struggling so, BANG. that did it. The body hung limp there, sandwitched between the Pagani and the fence, but it was still twitching, and growling. He gritted his teeth, and frowned. "Perche non estinguersi?!? ALL' INFERNO!" He screamed and slammed the brakes, running over the corpse, and splattering blood all over the metallic-like sheen of the car. With that, the engine roared and thundered forward, breaking through the rusty chains and screeching to a halt on the side of the street, then silence. He opened the car door, and looked at the damage. He grinned.
"FORZA VINCERO!"
