Skagway, Alaska is a small town where there's hardly anything unusual that goes on. It’s cold and dreary, and for the residents there, it’s home. Skagway doesn’t generally get a lot of newcomers. Most people that live in Skagway have had ancestors there throughout the town’s history, but just a few weeks ago, Skagway got twelve new residents. And these weren’t just separate people, either. They all came together. It’s the biggest gossip Skagway’s had in years…but of course, there’s more to the story then just the fact that the twelve people moved here.
The Cullen family has moved to Skagway after traveling around for fifteen years. Of course, the family is bigger then it was fifteen years ago. With Renesmee growing up quickly, and not wanting to miss a moment of being with his imprint, Jacob Black has been living with a house full of vampires. At first, his pack mates, Leah and Seth, stayed back around La Push and Forks, taking care of their home. But it quickly became evident that the two siblings didn’t want to stay at home where so much had happened. Plus, the pack didn’t feel much like a pack without their alpha. So the two joined up with the Cullen’s and Jacob after only five years of staying around La Push. Now, even though the story about how all of the children came to live with Carlisle and Esme is more complicated, the family is used to the whispers and gossip that come with moving to a new town. So moving to Skagway should be easy….right?
Skagway is the perfect location for the Cullen family. It’s remote and overcast, and it’s small. What the Cullen’s don’t know is that two blood-thirsty, power hungry, carnivorous vampires are heading up north to Alaska as well. Clara and Reagan want to take over the northern hunting area with newborn armies. And they don’t care who gets hurt in the process, making them all the more dangerous. What’s worse? They’ve decided that they’re going to start in Skagway. It’s small population would be easy to take over quickly, and the two need to set up a base somewhere.
And the Cullen’s knew nothing about it until a wild massacre appeared on the news one morning. All of them knew that something was up- that many people didn’t die over nothing. But who could be causing so much disaster so quickly? The Cullen’s knew that it was going to draw attention to their family, seeing as the murders started soon after their family arrived, not to mention, if all the killings kept up, the Volturi would know. Soon, the Cullen family could see their life crashing before their eyes.
Skagway, Alaska is about to be shaken up like it’s never been before. Something is rippling through the small town and everyone has to fight against it…whether they really know what’s going on or not. Because if they don’t try and bring down the force that Clara and Reagan are, they might loose it all.
For decades, the old Alaskan folktale “The House Dog and the Wolf” has been told to every generation. In the story, a very lean wolf comes across a fat, happy looking dog. When they meet, the wolf asks the dog how he can get enough food to eat and stay so plump. The dog decides to invite the wolf home to his master’s house, and on the way, he explains his role in the family. For the food that the family gives him, hand-fed by the master, the dog has to guard the house every night from thieves and other dangerous elements. The wolf is interested in this life- but as the two animals continue walking together, he notices a small mark on the dog’s neck. When the wolf asked what caused the mark, the dog that it was probably from the leash that he was to wear during the day. Although he was free to roam around each night, he was kept on a leash during the day time so that he would stay by the house. The wolf, upon hearing this, decides to leave. When the dog questions him about his sudden change of heart, the wolf replied, “I’d rather have ‘lean freedom’ than ‘fat slavery.’
Obviously, like every other story, in the end it teaches a lesson. The people of Alaska think nothing more of it, it’s just a story to tell to their children and grandchildren.
But that’s not exactly true. There is another version of the story, a version in which only a few small groups believe in, because of the living proof.
In this version of the story, the dog informs the wolf that the master caused the mark on his neck. The wolf continues to follow the dog home, still interested in the life style. When the wolf gets there and meets the family, he realizes that they are enemies rather than friends. The wolf does stay with the family, however, just to get the food and benefits because of how starving he is. He notices how the family eyes the dog like hungry animals about to catch their pray…Then, one day while roaming the yard, the wolf finds the dog dead, drained of all blood. The wolf, enraged, not only for the loss of his dear friend, but the fact that he was probably the next to get sucked dry, escaped the family’s home and streaked into town, baying in agony the whole trip. A young girl heard his baying and came to the wolf’s aid. The wolf, seeing her, immediately fell in a deep love, one that would never be able to be broken. For the time being, he let his enemies fate into naught, but a horrible nightmare. Gradually the wolf spent more and more time with the girl. He learned her native tongue and began to grow more human with each passing day. Eventually, he grew to even look human, loosing his hair, large fangs, and even his four legs- which became two. As the years passed, he was able to switch between wolf and human, growing colder when he did. Ice ran through his veins, much like his enemies.
The wolf hadn’t heard from his enemies yet. The wolf managed to blend in seamlessly with the people of the town, growing closer to them day by day. One day, while walking through the woods in wolf form, the wolf found others like him. They were able to shift in and out of human and wolf form, and they had blended in with the town just like them. They formed a pack- and swore that if trouble ever arisen from the town, they would be there to protect it. Then, one day, the family returned, murdering many people in the town by sucking out all of their blood. Furious, he vowed to go after them and bring his helpers along to kill them. The pack descended. A battle was fought, but eventually, the vampires agreed to leave peacefully. They say that the descendants of the original wolf pack exist today….
And that’s because they do. There are shifter wolves in Alaska, descending from the wolves in the original story, threatening to come after any vampire that comes on to their territory. They were dormant for a while, no one had seemed to become wolves in years, that was until fairly recently. In Skagway, Alaska, several men and boys are now starting to erupt into giant wolves. They’ve all found each other and have been looking back on the story- and now they know that the vampires are back.
But, the vampires aren’t just in Skagway. Sure, the Cullen family, Clara and Reagan, and the new born army are there, but just off into Denali, there is a coven of vampires there. The questions that remain are simple enough to state, but the answers aren’t exactly easy. Which coven of vampires has started the wolves transformation again? …And do the wolves even care? The battle between the wolves and the vampires never really died down. It just disappeared for a little while. But with all of these new wolves seeking revenge, and vampires truly unaware of it all, there’s going to be one hell of a battle raging up.
